Food Noise: The Phrase I Never Understood Until GLP-1s

Before starting GLP-1 medication, “food noise” wasn’t a phrase I was familiar with.

If I’m honest, I probably wouldn’t have understood it even if somebody had explained it to me. I thought hunger was simply hunger: you felt hungry, you ate, and then carried on with your day.

But food noise is different.

Now the phrase seems to be everywhere. You hear it across social media, in GLP-1 groups and in conversations about weight loss. It has become such a familiar part of the language around GLP-1s that it’s easy to forget many people had never heard of it before starting their own journey, including me.

It’s opening the fridge when you aren’t particularly hungry and hearing that little voice say, “That would be nice right about now.”

It’s walking past the pantry and suddenly thinking about what’s inside. It’s finishing one meal while already considering the next. Not because your body necessarily needs food, but because the thought has appeared and it can be surprisingly difficult to ignore.

Since taking GLP-1s, I finally understand what people mean. When that constant background chatter becomes quieter, you notice just how loud it had been before.

In my opinion, that quieter period creates a valuable opportunity. It gives you space to make decisions without feeling as though food is demanding your attention all day.

But quieting the food noise isn’t the same as learning what to do if it returns.

And here’s the slightly strange part: I don’t necessarily think all food noise is bad.

Sometimes I enjoy it. I like looking in the fridge, spotting something I fancy and saying yes. The difference is that I don’t want to feel as though I have to say yes every time.

I think of it a bit like my “wine noise.” Sometimes the thought of sharing a bottle of wine with my wife sounds lovely, and I’m happy to say yes. But that doesn’t mean saying yes every night.

For me, the goal isn’t to remove every thought about food. Food is one of life’s pleasures. The goal is to build habits that put you back in control, so you can enjoy saying yes without it becoming your automatic answer.

That’s why I believe the time on GLP-1 medication shouldn’t only be about losing weight. It should also be used to build habits that can support you afterwards: eating enough protein, developing a manageable approach to nutrition, becoming stronger and understanding the situations that trigger old behaviours.

You don’t need to be perfect. You need a plan you can realistically continue.

This is one of the reasons we created GLP Approach. We don’t provide medication. We provide training, nutrition guidance, accountability and community to help people make the most of their GLP-1 journey and feel better prepared for whatever comes next.

Because if the food noise does return, the important question is: will you have something stronger than willpower to rely on?
